Well holy crap on a stick. The House Judiciary Committee has voted to issue contempt of Congress citations against White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and President Bush's former legal counselor, Harriet Miers, for ignoring their subpoenas. In doing so, House lawmakers have entered choppy legal waters. In the past, Congress has issued hundreds of "contempt citations," but rarely to members of the executive branch. Here are some answers to the thorny legal questions involved, and a look at how the tug-of-war between the White House and Congress might play out.
Personally, I prefer that they issue a contempt charge if they don't get their testimony that they ask for. It shows that they have begun to grow a spine and are trying to follow the letter of the law. Now, whether or not they follow through with it is another case, but you just have to cheer at the idiotic kid down the block who keeps blabbering on about what he's going to do and never follows through with it when he finally does something.
Of course, the Constitutional legality is something that will have to be decided, but we'll find out more in the coming weeks.
