"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."
Mike, buddy, let me explain to you how America works ok? We came to America to escape religious persecution from assholes just like you. America isn't a theocracy. Everyone has the right to worship in any way that they want. If they want to worship their dog and wear a tin foil hat, that's their business. When you bring religion into politics, you run a very dangerous game. People hold their religious beliefs as sacred and when you say that a document that has protected them for more than 200 years should be changed to reflect "Standards" that may not line up with their own, you're acting just like the religious persecutors in Europe around the end of the 18th century.
It's the same thing when you try to bring up someone's skin color or sexual orientation. When you try to alter a document that is sacred to me to bring it in line with what YOU think it should reflect, you lose all sorts of credibility and let people know you're trying to make America a theocracy.
America is the land of the free for a reason. We welcome all comers. Every religion, every race, every economic background is welcome. If you want to come live in America in peace and do your part to make this country better, I welcome you with open arms.
However, I will never allow someone to try to shape America into a land where one group tries to alter our way of life to appease their religious beliefs. I don't care if it's Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, or any other religion. If you try to do that, you're not welcome in my home.
If you want to use your religion as a basis for your moral compass as a leader, that's ok. But you simply must put those views aside when you are trying to be a leader in a nation of vastly different subcultures. The benefit of all overrides the benefit of the few.
