Convicted terrorism supporter gets 17-year sentence

It appears that our "special techniques" for getting information out of suspected terrorists has backfired:

Cooke said she was giving Padilla some credit -- over the objections of federal prosecutors -- for his lengthy military detention at a Navy brig in South Carolina. She agreed with defense lawyers that Padilla was subjected to "harsh conditions" and "extreme environmental stresses" while there.

"I do find that the conditions were so harsh for Mr. Padilla ... they warrant consideration in the sentencing in this case," the judge said.

In other words, had we given the kid glove treatment to Padilla, his sentence would have been much higher.

But then again the judge in this case has decided to sugar coat what Padilla has done.

But Cooke said that as serious as the conspiracy was, there was no evidence linking the men to specific acts of terrorism anywhere.

"There is no evidence that these defendants personally maimed, kidnapped or killed anyone in the United States or elsewhere," she said.

So, let me get this straight.  Because he never actually killed anyone, he gets a lighter sentence??  What about the conspiracy of it all?  He had a job application for Al-Qaeda in HIS HANDWRITING!  I don't get it.  There are people in jail right now with longer sentences that didn't "personally maim, kidnap, or kill anyone".  Conspiracy to commit murder anyone?
