When I was a boy, my father was an alcoholic who would punish me for some of the most innocent "crimes", by grounding me to my room from the end of school until dinner, then back to the room until bed.
My only "toys" at the time were math books, so I read those up and down, and became quite good at math as a result. To give you an idea, I was in Calculus/Trig by 9th grade, when it's typically a 12th grade subject here in Washington State.
That being said, I was a bit curious about John Edwards' love child story and thought to myself, "self, I bet we can find out if there's any truth to the matter".
So, I did, and here's my results.
According to this article, Frances Quinn Hunter was born on Februrary 27th, 2008.
That means that the sex between John Edwards and Ms. Hunter would have had to occur around mid-late June 2007, given a standard 9 month gestation period.

Now, if John is a smart man, and I believe he is, given that he is an attorney, and you can't be a dummy when it comes to that, John's not going to be getting some on the side with his wife around.
So, one could assume that John was doing it when he had a few days off and didn't have an event scheduled, something that his wife Elizabeth would surely be attending.
So, let's take a look at some gaps in this schedule:
June 14th,
June 18th,
June 20th,
June 24th,
June 25th,
June 26th,
and finally July 1st.
If I were a betting man, I'd bet that the baby was conceived, if John is the father, between June 24th and June 26th. You have a three day stretch, you're stressed from campaigning, the wife's out of town or elsewhere, and here you have a young woman, willing to be with you.
A lot of guys wouldn't be able to turn that down. Now, the only real way we're going to be sure if this is his kid or not, is if we do a paternity test. If we do that, and he is the father, watch for ALL sorts of hell to break loose.
God, I love hypocritical politicians.

First of all, the gestation period is 40 weeks, which is closer to 10 months.
Secondly, his wife did not appear with him at all of his events, nor did she travel with him at all times. In fact, she was often somewhere else campaigning for him, so your presumption that the alleged affair could only have happened on a day without a posted event is also incorrect.
