The Dark Side Of Universal Health Care

It appears that the UK is now going to start "rationing" out care as a "necessary evil". I'll let the reaction of the first poster tell it all:

We throw billions into this bottomless pit to then be told that things are worse than ever and that now services will have to be rationed. Constant political dabling in the NHS has made the service even more inefficient and costly - how many Patient Managers, Financial Controllers, General Managers, Nursing Managers and other quango related jobs have been created in the last 10-15 years in the NHS and how much does that cost the taxpayer each year?

Radical reform, yes radical reform is urgently needed. No wonder people go private - the public service is a joke.

But of course, Democrat's plan for universal health care is going to be different from these guys right? I mean they couldn't possibly create a bureaucracy filled with bullshit that doesn't get anything accomplished, yet allows for people to slip through the cracks. Right?

I'm not saying our current system is perfect, but health care is something the government shouldn't be subsidizing. I shouldn't be having my tax money go towards a hypochondriac every time they get the sniffles, they head to the emergency room simply because they can. Don't believe me? If you had free health care and there was an inkling of a problem, ask yourself, would you go to the doctor? Of course you would, it's "free" right?

For someone who claims not to be a 'stereotypical' republican, you're certainly towing the party line...

The British NHS was implemented after WW2, it has continued from then on, If you look at any service that has lasted that long you can see some kind of failing - but what you have to do is balance that out with the positives (I wonder how many lives have been saved?)

Am I "towing the line" because I don't want billions of additional tax dollars to go towards people who won't better their lives by finding better jobs or use the basic health insurance offered by most states? I pay more in taxes then some people make in a year, and I'm tired of having my tax dollars go towards hand holding people throughout life. If your employer doesn't offer good enough insurance, get a different job that does. Soon enough the employer will find that they can't retain employees and they will work to get better health insurance or they will face a labor shortage. Most states I've looked into have basic health insurance already available, so where's the problem?

The problem is that Democrats want to raise taxes significantly to provide health coverage for people. While a noble cause, it will be rife with abuse and corruption. Doctors, medicine, hospital facilities all cost money and people will start going to the doctor's for little things that the human body can take care of with rest and chicken soup.

Sure, the British system probably has saved lives. Almost any medical system on the planet has, so that goes without saying. But how many people are going to be effected by this new "rationing" of medical care? How many people are going to have their health deteriorate or even die because of it? In a free society such as the one we have, you can go see any doctor you want. Don't like him? go to another doctor. There is no "rationing" here.

That being said, if one of my family members had a medical problem and it needed to be fixed, it's fixed. I do whatever is necessary to pay that medical bill. If I didn't have insurance, I'd work a second job to pay for it. But that's the difference between me and most liberals. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that my life and the lives of my family members are taken care of, when most liberals I've met want the government to take care of them so they don't have to. That's called laziness.
