Sarkozy fails to soften Russian backing for Iran

Oh it's about to get uglier when it comes to Iran's nuclear program.  The recent IAEA report is also not helping the US side of the argument.

Russian President Vladimir Putin refused Wednesday to bend to Western pressure over Iran, saying after talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy that he did not believe the Islamic republic was trying to build a nuclear bomb.

"We do not have information that Iran is trying to create a nuclear weapon. We operate on the principle that Iran does not have those plans," Putin told journalists after the end of the talks with Sarkozy who was in Moscow seeking to ease tensions.

He added that Russia shared the West's desire for Iran's nuclear programme, in which Russia is building the first civilian power station, to be "absolutely transparent."

Well if Russia truly wants the program to be "absolutely transparent", then how about delivering them fuel that cannot be used for nuclear weapons and accounting for all spent fuel rods?

Also, if Russia wants the program to be "absolutely transparent", then how about backing sanctions against Iran because of their onsite enrichment?  They can have a nuclear program for electricity, but not for weapons.  Why can't they simply say "we're going to support sanctions against you for your enrichment.  Get rid of that, and we can work out a deal".

But the Iranians won't go for that.  They want to enrich their own Uranium and do experiments with Plutonium to try to get a nuclear weapon.  If it was for electricity only, then what's the big deal in using a third party nation to give you nuclear fuel that can't be used for nuclear weapons?

I still want to know about the contamination at the university in Tehran.
