Normally I disagree with Democrats on many levels. However, they are dead on with this one.
House Democrats rejected a bid by Bush's fellow Republicans to provide retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies that cooperated in the president's warrantless spying program secretly begun shortly after the September 11 attacks.
Bullshit. The telecom's knew they were breaking the law and did it anyways. Now they are being hung out to dry for their efforts and are trying to weasel their way out of responsibility. It would be like me robbing someone and then asking Congress to make it legal after the fact. There's a reason why Qwest didn't comply with the government's request a few years ago for this information.
Just hours after Bush warned Democrats they would be rolling back efforts to protect the United States, the House of Representatives Judiciary and Intelligence committees approved legislation to ensure congressional and court oversight of the surveillance of suspected enemy targets.
Bullshit again. They aren't rolling back efforts, they are holding companies feet to the fire over their illegal activities. Even if the government requests it, you still have the moral obligation to say "no".
You really have to show me convincing evidence that what these telecom's did was right and was directly responsible for thwarting an attack to change my mind even a little bit.
Yes those companies may have believed that they were merely helping the US government, but they also have a legal responsibility towards their customers. Too many times telecom's have abused customers and now they are in deep trouble for trying to stick it to them over their privacy.
Well tough shit. You knew it was wrong, so now you have to deal with lawsuits.
