Finally some real Republicans do the right thing and actually get credit for it. And from the LA Times no less!
The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples should be
permitted to marry, rejecting state marriage laws as discriminatory.
The state high court's 4-3 ruling was unlikely to end the debate
over gay matrimony in California. A group has circulated petitions for
a November ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution to
block same-sex marriage, while the Legislature has twice passed bills
to authorize gay marriage.
Today’s ruling
by the Republican-dominated court affects more than 100,000 same-sex
couples in the state, about a quarter of whom have children, according
to U.S. census figures. It came after high courts in New York,
Washington and New Jersey refused to extend marriage rights to gay
couples. Before today, only Massachusetts' top court has ruled in favor
of permitting gays to wed.
This, believe it or not, is a core Republican value. Too many religious nuts in our party have made us look like intolerant idiots. But, "lesser government interference in the publics lives" is something Republicans tout, but that also means that you can't ban gay marriage. Because by doing so, you're interfering with the lives of the public, thus, being a hypocrite and creating enemies within the gay community that don't need to be made enemies out of.
Everyone who's a regular reader knows I've supported gay marriage since the beginning. There's a handy search feature in the upper left in case you don't believe me. But let me ask all of you on both sides of the aisle this one question and it should help show you that this court ruling was the correct one: What's the harm if your neighbor is gay and they want to marry their boyfriend/girlfriend?
Is gay marriage an important enough issue to warrant a Constitutional amendment? If so, why?
If gay marriage is a threat to America like you've said, take a look at the attacks of 9/11 and tell me that gay marriage is going to destroy our society like suicide attacks of this magnitude.
Gay folks:
Please do us a favor and refer to your spouse as your "husband" or "wife". I really hate it when you say "partner" or "life partner" or some other sort of bullshit. If you want to be completely accepted, you should use terms that everyone else uses. :)
