Jefferson Memorial Sinking?

I wouldn't be a bit surprised because Washington DC is practically surrounded by water. With running water, any barrier put up is just another mineral it has to erode over time.

The important thing is to make sure that whatever fix that is needed is a permanent one. Jefferson is one of the founding fathers of this country and a memorial to him must be preserved just as much as the other "important" memorials such as the Lincoln and Washington Monument. Of course, with memorials and a tourist attraction that it is, you need to fix the problem permanently but also do it in a way that doesn't interfere with the day to day operations of the memorial.

It's similar to the problems faced by the transportation folks when they replace a bridge or expand a road. Those problems must be fixed without interrupting traffic too greatly.

I'm sure that other monuments across the nation have similar problems, but we have to make sure that those monuments are there for future generations to understand who we are as a people.

Monuments are just reinforced concrete and steel. It's the words, the meaning, and the ideas that make it worth something. When you are at a national monument, you get an up close and personal touch to the rich history this nation has and you start to understand that these memorials were to people who risked everything, including their homes and families, to bring forth a new nation that their children and grandchildren might grow up and live under a new freedom that was thought impossible in any other nation on earth.
