Oh Man Can I Call It!

You know, being right a majority of the time does get old, and tooting my own horn does make me look like a bit of a jerk, but TOOT TOOT! Democrats have said that they are dropping their demand for a time line for the withdrawal of US troops in Iraq.

They knew they didn't have the votes. They knew it was making them look bad. They knew President Bush wasn't going to budge, so they had to do this, otherwise it would be political suicide.

Beyond that, Democrats remain deeply divided over how far to give in to the White House.

However, they have asked for more Iraqi accountability, which is more than fair, they've asked for reasonable things up to that point, but the time line was something that isn't going to work.

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (Md.) indicated that the next bill will include benchmarks for Iraq -- such as passing a law to share oil revenue, quelling religious violence and disarming sectarian militias -- to keep its government on course. Failure to meet benchmarks could cost Baghdad billions of dollars in nonmilitary aid, and the administration would be required to report to Congress every 30 days on the military and political situation in Iraq.

That is perfectly reasonable and responsible. Why couldn't they ask for this before? Because they had to appease their constituents. They had to make it look like they were "gonna make a difference" and all that other sort of rhetoric. But the bottom line is that we aren't going to allow the enemy to know when/when/how we're going to leave. That means they'll have to come up with a new game plan. With them on the run and violence levels coming down significantly, it's only a matter of time before they are defeated completely.
