Carlos The Jackal

Osama, Khalid, or even Timothy, have nothing on Carlos. Carlos The Jackal is one of the first larger than life terrorists who was responsible for the OPEC kidnappings, various bombings, and other assorted atrocities. Now, already serving a life sentence, he's going to go on trial for another bombing that killed many people.

Granted Carlos didn't kill as many people as the before mentioned terrorists, Carlos had a reputation of getting the job done and he wasn't above killing for money. That was his one weakness. He didn't have ideological reasons for his crimes, it was mainly for the money. His various behaviors alienated him from his employers however.

What I don't understand though is, if he's already serving a life sentence and his new trial has a maximum penalty of a life sentence, what's the point? Is it possible that he can be set free sometime in the future? I can't see the French allowing him to be set free, even if he serves the sentence until he's 100 years old.
