Some Common Sense

A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Superintendent David Thweatt said the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff's office, leaving students and teachers without protection. He said the district's lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target.

As any reader who's been coming to this site more then one time, you all know I support the Second Amendment with ferocity.

And when teachers ask for the ability to carry a weapon at school to combat school shootings, I can't disagree with their line of thinking.

And it certainly appears that the "requirements" are things that I would expect myself to do as well.  Be safe, be calm, be prepared to kill or wound if the situation requires it.

It's sad that in this day and age such things are even thought of, but alas, these are the times we live in.

Nevermind parents actually DOING their job and keeping firearms away from children, who act upon emotions rather than logic.

School shootings seems to be a new phenomenon don't you think?  I mean, can someone point to me and show me a school shooting besides Charles Whitman in the 60's that happened before say 1990 or so?

Of course, that was back at a time when kids were afraid of their dad, when spankings were so routine that they happened IN school BY the teacher or principal.

That was back in a time when parents who didn't slap their kids when they got out of line watched as someone else, many times a complete stranger, slapped their kids back into line.

Ahh the good old days. :)

When I have children, I shall bring those days back.  If you catch my kid getting out of line, I EXPECT you to discipline them if I am not around.  I expect teachers to hold them back a grade if they fail.  I expect them to be afraid of the sound of a car door closing when I pull into the driveway after they've gotten into trouble.
