Utah: No More Gun Permits for Foreigners

"Utah had become the state of choice for people who did not live in the United States but wanted to carry a gun in the country," said Richard Wyss, attorney at the Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigation. State authorities "became alarmed," he told lawmakers Tuesday.

About 1,000 citizens of other countries have permits that allow them to carry a concealed gun in Utah and 30 states that have an agreement with Utah. Most are Canadians; others are from countries including Japan, Switzerland, Aruba, Mongolia, Mexico and the Republic of Congo.

WHAT??  Utah is issuing gun permits to non US citizens?  What the hell is that about?  Are they out of their minds?  Non US citizens have NO rights under the Constitution, let alone the right to bear arms.  If they were in the middle of becoming US citizens or were naturalized citizens, I could understand, but it's even worse then you could imagine:

Background checks on foreigners were weak because Utah was denied access to records in other countries, but permits were issued if applicants met other requirements, authorities said. Utah now won't renew or issue the permits unless it can do a thorough background check.

So they were allowing potentially criminal, non US citizens to come into their gun stores and walk away with a firearm?  Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired immediately and taken away to a mental hospital so they can't endanger anyone else anymore.

Besides, isn't Utah a state that bans alcohol?  I haven't been there in years, so I don't know for sure, but I remember someone saying that.  If that's true, why ban alcohol, but not ban foreigners from getting weapons?
