Bay County rapist to be castrated - Northwest Florida Daily News

To tell you the truth, I prefer voluntary castration of sex offenders.  But that's only because I have dozens of children in my own life.  Speaking as an uncle, cousin, and Godfather, I support any kind of suffering that sex offenders get to feel.

However, the problem remains as to what do we do about this issue?  Sure, it's a feel good idea and it may actually help this man not have urges anymore.

However, there is a troubling thought about all this.  What if it doesn't work?  What if this guy gets out early because of castration and then attacks someone else?

On the other hand, what about other crimes?  It's a "slippery slope" when you start offering people to mutilate themselves in order to get a lighter sentence.  Are we going to cut off fingers of thieves?  Are we going to pull out the eyes of peeping toms?

It sounds dramatic, and it probably is, but just a few years ago castration was unheard of as well.  We need to be careful about the things we allow in the criminal justice system.  Otherwise we may find ourselves becoming more and more like backwards Middle Eastern countries.
