Romney Takes "Sanctuary Cities" To Task

"Immigration laws don't work if they're ignored," the ad's announcer states. "That's the problem with cities like Newark, San Francisco and New York City that adopt sanctuary policies. Sanctuary cities become magnets that encourage illegal immigration and undermine secure borders."

"Legal immigration is great," Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, himself says in the ad. "But illegal immigration, that we've got to end. And amnesty is not the way to do it."

And he's exactly right. Cities around the nation need to be held accountable for ignoring Federal law. This certainly wouldn't happen if suddenly a city said "murder is now something that's legal here". It's all in degrees of crime to them. Crime is crime, and choosing to ignore one law sets a dangerous precedent to ignore others.

What should happen is the Federal government should start withholding spending dollars from these cities until they comply with all Federal laws. Then you'll see a turn around in policies. To have a sanctuary policy cost your city $50 or $100 million dollars a year or more in Federal funds, you might notice a change in that policy. No one is saying we don't want immigrants. America was built by immigrants. But illegal immigrants are costing this country billions of dollars in services every year and we simply can't afford it.
