It's always fun to see someone so pig headed that they can't see reason and be willing to make compromises. I guess the same could be said about President Bush, but Democrats are feeling the pinch in that they didn't appease their constituents about ending the Iraq war, they look like they are dragging their feet about funding current troops, making them look like they don't support them, and it's not looking good for them.
Some Democrats believe the GOP solidarity will crack over time, noting that polls show heavy public support for a withdrawal plan.
Here's where they really run into problems. When the Iraq war was popular, Democrats all over the place were stating how bad Saddam was, how we couldn't afford to allow him to remain in power, etc, etc. When it became unpopular, Democrats shifted their views and had the solidarity of Jello.
Republicans on the other hand tend to be more rigid in their beliefs of what's right and wrong. If Democrats believe that Republicans can be made to change their minds on the time line, they may be right about one or two Republicans who are on the fence, but they certainly don't have the ability to get another 16 Senators and more than 100 Representatives to agree to override a Presidential veto.
Maybe their doing a bit of grandstanding for the press so their constituents don't rip them apart at election time. Maybe they honestly believe their line of bullshit. Whatever the case may be, the clock is ticking, and the more restrictions you place on military commanders, the more backlash you will face from all sides.
