The May 15 ruling took effect at 5:01 p.m. (8:01 p.m. ET) Monday. Gay and lesbian couples had lined up for hours outside county clerk's offices in anticipation of the decision coming into force.
Lesbian rights activists Del Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 84, were the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in San Francisco on Monday, with Mayor Gavin Newsom presiding over their wedding ceremony.
"This is an extraordinary moment in history," Newsom told a cheering, standing-room-only crowd at City Hall. "I think today, marriage as an institution has been strengthened."
Good Lord people are dumb. So what if gay people want to get married? Republicans should be the first ones to support gay marriage as it runs with one of our core beliefs: Lesser government involvement in peoples lives.
Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness right? If people want to get married to another person, I don't care. If they are law abiding citizens, where's the harm if two women or two men want to get married? Treat them equally under the law. That means that alimony, child support, as well as every other good and bad thing that comes along with marriage should be given to them.
Although I'd prefer not to see the wedding night video of Del and Phyllis. Too old for my tastes. :)
