Dr. Jack Kevorkian was released from prison today after serving 8 years for murder. While technically he did commit a crime, I don't really see the harm. If someone wants to end their life, where's the problem? If someone has a terminal illness, is in a coma and signed a waiver before they went into that coma, or any number of other problems that we face, I don't see why someone who've I've never met can tell me what to do with my life.
It's these type of people that need a good reality check. They aren't the ones who have to deal with chemotherapy, crippling pain, or drug cocktails with severe side effects. They have no right to tell me how and when to end my life. It's about peace and control. You want to go on your own terms. I can completely understand that. If you're in pain, I don't have a problem with you putting your mouth over a shotgun and blowing your brains across a wall.
The only thing I would ask anyone who's in that position to think of the ramifications on their family. Talk to them about it first before you decide to end your life. Your spouse, siblings and parents might understand, but children might be very devastated by your decision. Everyone in my circle of friends and family know that if I am ever in that position, I will probably end my life on my terms. I'll give away all my possessions, send my love to my friends, family and loved ones, and blow my brains out. Maybe it's because I've worked in the health care world and seen what old age and dementia or Alzheimer's can do to a person. Maybe it's my male pride in that I don't want someone wiping my ass after I've shit my pants. Either way, it's not something I look forward to and no one on this planet can tell me what I can and can't do about it.
