Hanging Didn't Go As Planned

Well Barzan Hassan was decapitated during his hanging. While purely accidental, it's not unheard of. Too long of a drop will yank a person's head right off. Ridha said the two men, dressed in orange prisoner uniforms, "looked very surprised" that they were actually going to be hanged. They "were very apologetic," asking that they not be put to death, he said. "They asked God for forgiveness," he said.

Why would they be surprised?? They hung Saddam, so they thought that since they got the big guy, they wouldn't want to get the little guys too? Of course they were apologetic, they didn't want to die. But then again, they didn't seem to mind putting to death 148 people back in 1982. They weren't merciful then, so why do they deserve mercy now? Easy, they don't.
