Republicans Shoot Down Unemployment Benefits Bill

Pretty inflammatory headline isn’t it?  I mean, I’d have no problem extending unemployment benefits for folks who are out of work, so what’s the Republicans problem?  A rule change that Democrats wanted.

Kyl noted that the House bill would eliminate a requirement that people work 20 weeks before receiving unemployment benefits, "something I don't think we want to change."

"So as a result, we would like to have the Senate weigh in and make sure that if this is done, it is done in the right way," he said.

The White House also has threatened to veto the House's legislation if it makes it through the Senate, preferring legislation that would only extend unemployment benefits in states with high unemployment.

House Democrats said 10 percent of the unemployed would not get unemployment benefits if the 20-week provision was not deleted.

They wanted to get rid of a rule that says you must work 20 weeks during the previous year to get unemployment benefits.  Yep, they wanted to allow people who have worked less then 6 months prior to being unemployed to be able to collect unemployment benefits.

That goes against the very fabric of what it means to be an American.  You work hard, you sacrifice for you and your family, and when something bad like job loss happens, we’ll help you get back on your feet.  That’s what unemployment is all about, helping you get back on your feet.

So, there’s no mention of what the requirement that Democrats wanted, only that they wanted it “deleted”.

That means that someone could theoretically work 1 day, then claim 39 weeks of unemployment had this bill passed.  That’s almost 10 months.  Then they could have worked another day, and claimed another 26 weeks (6 months) of unemployment.  Of course, they wouldn’t make as much because unemployment is based upon how much you’ve worked in the previous quarters.  But that’s the problem.  You’d have people abusing the system that Democrats so badly want to put into place.

That’s socialism and promotes the lazy to do nothing but sit on their ass all day long and live off of the work of others.  I’m all for unemployment benefits, because hard working Americans pay for it, but I’m not willing to relax the rules so someone can sit at home all day long and watch Jerry Springer.
