Honda's new zero-emission, hydrogen fuel cell car rolled off a Japanese production line Monday and is headed to southern California, where Hollywood is already abuzz over the latest splash in green motoring.
The FCX Clarity, which runs on hydrogen and electricity, emits only water and none of the gases believed to induce global warming. It is also two times more energy efficient than a gas-electric hybrid and three times that of a standard gasoline-powered car, the company says.
Honda expects to lease out a "few dozen" units this year and about 200 units over three years. In California, a three-year lease will run $600 a month, which includes maintenance and collision coverage.
I think this is the first shot across the bow in America's eventual getting off of foreign oil. OPEC and other exporting oil nations are in a panic now that car companies are in a race to bring about a new line of cars that don't run on oil. The best part? You can get hydrogen from literally almost any source. Including water.
People have had it with foreign oil and being at the mercy of OPEC and other nations. They've "gone green" in many of their energy uses. I myself swapped my light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones years ago. I have been wanting to move to LED lights, but they are still spendy and don't put out a lot of light.
I've got a programmable thermostat that's set to only heat and cool the house when I am home. That in of itself has saved me TONS of money.
We are witnessing a fundamental change in US policy, and it's got oil companies VERY nervous.
