Today, Justice Department head Alberto Gonzales admitted that the FBI had abused the Patriot Act after an audit found many problems. They found that statistics were underreported, agents asked for information without authorization, and agents even lied in order to get the information that they were after.
This is a clear case of official misconduct and those agents involved should be disciplined or fired. In cases where they lied, they should be prosecuted for perjury or other appropriate crimes.
This is from the same Alberto Gonzales who questioned the very rights that are guaranteed under the Constitution less then a few months ago. While I support all law enforcements efforts to capture and prosecute criminals and spies, there are rules that need to be followed and if they are not, innocent Americans are sometimes victimized. That is completely unacceptable and needs to end now. With two major screw ups under his belt, it’s time for Alberto Gonzales to resign.
We simply cannot trust a man who questions the very freedoms we enjoy under the Constitution with his weakly veiled attempt at semantics. Yes, it’s most likely just a few agents who acted out of line, and we certainly shouldn’t judge the entire law enforcement community based upon the actions of a few, but with Gonzales, if you can’t trust those who’s job it is to run things, then they need to be replaced with someone who can.
As a side note, notice how Ted Kennedy tries to push this upon the Bush administration even though he clearly has nothing to do with it. Ted Kennedy is trying to politicize an event and gain points among his constituents. Perhaps we should blame the administration that was in power when Ted Kennedy decided to let that poor woman drown to death in the accident he caused while he came up with an alibi?
