The family of one of the men who was shot by a retired United States Marine while they attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop said the customer shouldn't have pulled the trigger.
According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.
Donicio Arrindell, 22, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. Fredrick Gadson, 21, was shot in the chest and ran from the Subway, but police found him in hiding in some bushes on the property of a nearby BankAtlantic.
Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.
Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger.
"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.
This ladies grandson and a friend forced a 71 year old Marine into a bathroom while trying to rob a Subway, and she's condemning the Marine? This woman is EXACTLY what's wrong with parents today.
Her husband, Ivory Jones, also condemned the media for its portrayal of Lovell's actions.
"I don't condone what they did, (but) I definitely don't condone the news people making him out to seem like they're making a hero out of this man because he shot somebody down," he said.
Oh sure, don't "condone" the criminal behavior, but condemn the 71 YEAR OLD MAN that they were trying to victimize.
If you were better parents and grandparents, this probably wouldn't have happened. You're obviously the type of people that coddled this idiot, letting him run wild in the streets, instead of providing him with an example of how to behave in public. Since he decided that it would be a good idea to rob a Subway, he paid the ultimate price for it.
This is DIRECTLY your fault. I'm glad your grandson died at the hands of this man. He was a criminal who tried to victimize a man who's only crime was he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They PULLED A GUN ON HIM, what did you expect? Who's to say what they would have done had this man not been there and a woman with small children were?
Sure, you won't "condone" him victimizing others, but will scream from the highest mountain that the person DEFENDING THEMSELVES were the bad guys.
You think there might be a reason why the police aren't going to be filing charges against the Marine? How about what he did was perfectly legal, and in my eyes, should be encouraged.
This is exactly the kind of case that gun control idiots don't want you to hear about. The lawful use of a firearm against a criminal who was trying to victimize innocent people.
By the way Mrs. Jones, Mr. Lovell didn't "take the law in his hands", he was defending himself. There is a MASSIVE difference. Of course, I don't expect you to know that, with your obvious lack of parental control there.
Let me explain something to you all. I love each and every one of the children in my life. I'm a Godfather to some of them. I was there for their births. I introduced their parents to one another in some cases. However, if one of them does something like this and tries to victimize someone by shoving a gun in their face, they simply deserve the consequences of that action, including losing their live because their potential victim decided to fight back.
I hold no one responsible for their death except them if that's what happens.
Sometimes, you have to say "you got what you deserved" instead of trying to blame everyone else except the person who deserves it; the criminal.
Thanks Mr. Lovell, it's men like you that make this country great.
Travis
