Here's a perfect example of what I mean by Democrats and their uncontrollable lust for Gun Control.
First off, the gunman in Utah killed 5 people, not 10.
Secondly: "In Philadelphia, a gunman opened fire on his colleagues using an AK-47 assault rifle he legally purchased."
If the guy purchased the firearm legally, then there's nothing that you can do about it. There are AK-47's all over the place in America. Most are owned by law abiding citizens. If someone decides to flip out, there's nothing you can really do except take him out.
Thirdly: "These dangerous weapons, which are intended to hit multiple targets in a short period of time, were allowed back on our streets when the federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004."
Ummm. Sorry sweety, but I've been able to purchase an AK-47 legally even during the Assault Weapons Ban. The Assault Weapons Ban had nothing to do with the fact a man who owned one legally went nuts and killed a bunch of people.
Lastly: "I have again introduced legislation to permanently ban assault weapons. These weapons have no practical use. They are not used by hunters for sport or by individuals for self-defense. They are intended to kill as many individuals as possible in a short amount of time and have no place on our streets. The unfortunate situation in Philadelphia could have been avoided if Congress stood up to the gun lobby in 2004."
Patently false. I don't need a reason to own a particular weapon. Just because a weapon may not fit your definition of hunting or self-defense purposes doesn't mean I can't legally own it. If you don't want those weapons, don't buy them. But don't think you can infringe on my right to own any weapon I'd like.
Philadelphia could not have avoided the shootings they had because the weapon was purchased legally and he could have had access to that weapon even while the ban was in effect.
If you want to get down to brass tacks, the Second Amendment doesn't say anything about criminal records, automatic weapons, or anything else prohibiting gun ownership. We as a society put those into place.
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
