John Farr: Just How Many Campus Shootings Before We Wake Up?

Oh good, another knee jerk reaction to the NIU shootings!  But this time, we have John Farr!

Now, Mr. Farr even has the guts to explain "I know our Constitution talks about the right to bear arms, but".  Sorry Mr. Farr, there is no "but" in the Second Amendment.  Just like there is no "but" in the First Amendment which protects your right to free speech.

But even better is that with typical folks at Huffington Post, he goes on to blame society, Hollywood, and video games.

Mr. Farr, contrary to what you might believe, 99% of gun owners are law abiding citizens who own these weapons for various reasons, and it is not your right to tell them how they can and cannot own them.

Perhaps if you bothered to blame the people who actually did the shooting instead of video games, you'd have a leg to stand on in your argument, but instead, you come across as yet another delusional Jack Thompson type that should rightfully be dismissed.

How many shooting sprees have your two children gone on Mr. Farr?  If they haven't, why do you suppose that is?  Do you suppose it's good parenting, or do you think that your children are such psychopaths that if they had a gun available to them, that they'd go on a rampage and kill as many people as possible?

If movies and video games were responsible for these crimes, you'd see a wave of bloodshed that hasn't been seen since WWII.

You write:

I am not looking to the Republicans or Mr. McCain to lead the charge, as they have historically courted the sadly influential support of the N.R.A in the past, an organization which in my mind is moving ever closer to certain hate-groups, both in its relevance and contribution to today's supposedly more enlightened society.

Why does a charge to change even need to take place?  Why haven't shootings like the NIU and Virginia Tech massacres haven't happened in stereotypical places that have armed citizens?

Why is the NRA a hate group?  Because they defend the right of the people to keep and bear arms?  If the NRA is a hate group, then surely you would think that Moveon.org, Code Pink, and Daily Kos are hate groups as well.  They continually spew out hatred for anything even remotely related to our military or conservative values.

I wish these profoundly misguided people would spend more time hunting deer (whose numbers are proliferating), and less blocking measures that would make it more difficult for troubled, alienated nineteen year olds to procure automatic weapons.

Now you're just exaggerating to get your point across.

No nineteen year old can buy an automatic weapon.  Automatic weapons are unbelievably rare and extremely expensive on the open market.

Perhaps if you had even a basic understanding of how weapons work and are classified, you'd have a different argument.

If you are that worried about our gun laws and the safety of your children, perhaps you should ask that students of legal age be able to carry a concealed weapon while on campus.  Or would you rather your children simply run for their lives and hope that they don't get shot in the back by a deranged criminal who's off his meds?

Scarier still is today's story on CNN about a student group that advocates over-ruling the national college ban on students carrying concealed weapons. While this may seem to some like a sensible safety precaution, it also reflects a regression of 150 years in our country's history. The last time I checked, the days of Wyatt Earp and the Wild West were over.

Other students want to be able to defend themselves and you don't want to let them?  What kind of a man are you?  The days of the Wild West certainly are over, but if someone is of legal age to carry a weapon, I have no problems with them carrying one.  Colleges don't seem to have a problem with women who carry mace or a taser, so it's a tad hypocritical.  Sure, you can try to argue that guns are a different story, but all of them are designed to fend off an attacker.

For me, there can be no doubt: the phrase in our constitution concerning "the right to bear arms" is absurdly out-of-date, and should be amended.

But there's the key phrase that ruins your argument, "For me".

If you don't want a gun, don't get one.  But don't try to instill your beliefs onto someone else and try to take away their right to bear arms.  You don't see me trying to take away your right to free speech, so leave my Constitutional rights alone.
