Representative John Murtha has claimed that impeachment "is on the table" in reference to President Bush. Here's a few problems that Mr. Murtha has:
1) He doesn't have enough votes to impeach the President. You need a 2/3rds majority to remove the President from office, and you simply don't have them. You'd have to convince 16 or so Republicans to jump to the other side of the fence to vote for impeachment in the Senate and more than 100 in the House. It isn't going to happen.
2) The American public will see through this as partisan bullshit and not get behind an impeachment movement
3) It takes time to impeach. It would take almost the rest of the President's term to remove him from office. That would put you right at election time and Democrats are very afraid that any actions they take that might put them in a bad light might backfire badly and reflect in the polls.
4) If you impeach President Bush, you have President Cheney. That's a lot worse for Democrats in general as they would rather have Bush then Cheney.
5) This is the most important one. President Bush has done NOTHING ILLEGAL. Impeachment was made for when the President does something wrong and illegal. This isn't one of those times for impeachment.
Unfortunately for Democrats, this is being seen as what it is: Political grandstanding with no real substance. Sounds an awful lot like their normal behavior.
