Marines refuse to leave Berkeley dispute Council resolution

We vote to ask the US Marines to move out of Berkeley, and if they don't, "they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests."

Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, R-South Carolina, lashed out at Berkeley following Tuesday's resolution. DeMint said he would draft  legislation to strip the city of federal money, including funds destined for UC Berkeley, for school lunches in the Berkeley Unified School District and public safety.

"The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money," DeMint said in a statement.

"Well now wait a minute, we want to clarify our statement"rbby_92

Man, I knew Berkeley was full of liberal pussies, but WOW, I didn't think they'd turn tail and run as quickly as they did.

Council members Betty Olds and Lauri Capitelli have proposed backing off the anti-Marines declaration and publicly declaring that Berkeley opposes the war in Iraq but supports the troops.

But that's not what you voted on.  You KNEW what you were voting on, otherwise, you didn't read what you were voting on and you shouldn't be sitting on the City Council.  So, if you knew what you were voting on, you should have "clarified" then.  But you didn't.  You went ahead and voted and now you're facing a nasty backlash.

Do us all a favor liberals, if you're going to stand up and speak for what you believe in, have the backbone and a little integrity to say "Yeah, I said it, and I'll deal with the consequences of that statement", instead of acting like a bunch of scared cowards.

You're all very loud and proud when it's popular, but you get a case of the quiets when you see that Freedom of Speech has real consequences.
