Example Of Minimum Wage Wrong

Here's a perfect example of what I was talking about when I was arguing against a minimum wage hike.

A North Carolina waitress on Saturday lauded the Democratic-initiated increase in the minimum wage, saying in the party's weekly radio address that the extra money will have a ripple effect on millions of lives.

That's where you're wrong, it'll have a ripple effect on EVERYONE'S lives.

Fawn Townsend, a nightshift server in Raleigh, N.C., criticized Republicans for blocking efforts to raise the minimum wage over the last 10 years. The Democratic-led Congress approved the increase earlier this year and President Bush signed it into law in May.

Townsend criticized Bush for threatening to veto a bill that would provide more money for the Children's Health Insurance Program. The Senate has voted to add 3 million lower-income children to the plan at a cost of $35 billion, and the House has approved a more ambitious and expensive version. Bush has proposed spending just $5 billion more on the program.

In the future, Townsend said she hoped to attend nursing school _ and she applauded Democrats for passing legislation to make higher education more affordable.

"I'm grateful that our Democratic leaders in Congress are taking our country in a new direction," she said. "They have accomplished more this year than Republicans accomplished in the past six years combined _ including giving people like me a long-overdue raise."

A "long-overdue raise"?? You mean to tell me she hasn't gotten a yearly raise from the place that she works at?? What kind of crappy restaurant does she work at? Even folks at McDonalds get yearly raises. Plus, she shouldn't be working at a minimum wage job if she is trying to support her family. Do you think that the restaurant is simply going to eat the extra 70 cents an hour per person? Of course not, they are going to pass that cost down to the customer.

People complain about the national debt, but they criticize President Bush when he wanted to raise the children's program $5 billion dollars instead of the $35 billion dollars that the Senate wanted and an even higher amount from the House, but they don't seem to get it that the money has to come from somewhere. Money doesn't magically grow on trees. Added expenses to our already overblown budget only irritates the problem further.

What's worse is that this woman is under the illusion that the Democratically controlled Congress is actually making things happen. This Congress has so far accomplished little to nothing in terms of solving American problems and this woman seems to think they are doing a good job. She must be of the 14% of the population that think Congress is doing a good job.
