Now the title of this article is misleading, it does raise some good points. First off, it doesn't mean that a child can go into a local Gamestop or Wal-Mart and pick it up. Both of these stores have policies that restrict Mature rated games to children. This is no different then when I was a child and my father wouldn't allow me to see the movie "The Day After." He thought it would give me nightmares. These video games are multi million dollar productions, just like movies, and just like movies, they are rated. It is up to parents to decide if it is appropriate for them to view it.
Now I'm not naive. Children are going to get their hands on things that they shouldn't. Every guy who comes to my site has had porn in his hands before the age of 18. Most have had a taste of alcohol before the age of 21. I've had both and I've even had guns in my hands WAY before the age of 18. I think I turned out ok even though I've done things that most parents would lose sleep over at night. However, it's still important for parents to say "no".
