Your Career: Where are the women in tech?

Renee Davias, a software-applications director at a New York-based law firm, sees this every day. Often she wishes there were more women in her IT group and in the profession overall. One of only two women in an 11-member development team, she likes working with her male colleagues but believes another female or two could help the team dynamic.

"With the men sometimes, they’re trying to see who can pee the highest on the hydrant," she says, speaking metaphorically, of course. "Women are much more matter-of-fact, more collaborative."

Yes, that isn't sexist at all is it?

I think this is where my "blindness" comes into play here about gender in the workplace.  If women don't like or want to be in IT, then who cares?  If men don't want or like a particular field, who cares about that as well?

So, should I ask Ms. Davias why there aren't more men in other respective fields that are usually dominated by women?  Or is it because women try to knife one another in the back often?  You see how sexist, blanket statements makes you look stupid?  Why is it ok to ask why women or black folks aren't in a particular field of work, but if you ask why white people or men aren't, then you're a bigot or a racist.  It's a double standard.

Asking for a particular group to join the workforce area is idiotic at best.  I don't care that most cops are men.  I care that cops do their job well.  You won't see me asking why there aren't more women at police officers.  Why?  Because asking people who lack a wang to do things they normally wouldn't aspire to be is a recipe for disaster.

It's the same for Affirmative Action.  I want the best person for the job.  I don't want someone in a job because they meet the criteria for "diversity".  If you want a "rainbow" of people, go to New York and ride the subway.  If you want your business to run as well as it can, hire the best  people and leave race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender at the door.
